  1. 3/55 star teachers - 3 star app

5 star classes with great teachers. 2-3 star app which needs replacing. Nothing beats italki for learning a language online. No screen app - just the in person video classes from experienced native speakers or those with much training in the language, almost all of whom have teaching credentials of one kind or another - and who can work with you at any level, A1 beginner to C2 advanced. Plus, so many languages with teaches all over the world. That's the 5 star part. The 3 or 2 star part is the app itself. Just about everything on it is difficult to navigate, hard to find, and, in the case of calendaring, gives a completely insufficient amount of useful info. Please italki, contract a professional app developer and have your site completely modernized and rationalized. Sometimes I think using your app is harder than learning the dative case in German! Ok, well maybe in some more difficult language. No matter how rubbish the italki app, absolutely use the italki service if you really want to learn a foreign language and you're not in that particular country. It's available at many different prices and teacher levels. You really don't need a highly trained & expensive teacher at the beginning, but you will as you progress. But then you'll be committed in your mind to learning. There are many different teachers - so if not having success with one, try another!

  2. 5/5Life changing

Learning languages has never felt accessible to me because private tutors are expensive, classes are expensive, and we all know duolingo doesn’t really cut it for actually speaking a language. I’ve always heard that the best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it, but traveling to other countries is expensive too! Enter italki: an affordable platform where you get to connect with native speakers of many many languages and dialects (this is the only place I’ve found a tutor for Egyptian Arabic). You can watch videos from tutors introducing themselves to see if you think your tutor will be a good fit for your learning goals and common interests, and you can see their whole schedule. Italki seriously makes it so so easy. I can’t necessarily jump on a plane to Mexico or Egypt to immerse myself in a language, but italki feels pretty dang close. I’ve learned more, and more quickly, than ever before in my life. For the first time being fluent in another language feels possible! I truly can’t recommend italki enough! And some other online tutoring platforms seemed really sketchy, but I can confirm from years of usage that italki is straightforward and there are no hidden fees. 🖖🏼 Happy learning!!

  3. 5/5Amazing Japanese tutors that care about you!

This app directly and easily connects me with my language learning goals. The app facilitates easy communications, payment, and scheduling with my tutors. I have three amazing credentialed Japanese tutors that diligently and patiently help me speak, read, and enjoy learning Japanese top accomplish my goals. I have one tutor one hour a week for grammar, another tutor two hours a week to coach me reading NHK Easy News articles and discussion, and another tutor for general conversation, grammar, and lessons. I started with one tutor, then after a two months, when I became comfortable with italki and after I developed my learning strategy, I added two more to help me reach my goal. I feel like all three of these amazing tutors are my friends, and they really care if I learn. They patiently and professionally help me improve and I’m indebted to them and really appreciate their efforts. (It can’t be fun listening to people like me misspeak and butcher the language everyday. But they quickly correct me and even document new words I learn and correct my phrases, recording their notes in a google document that I can read while we talk, and I can refer to it after my lessons.). And yes, we laugh and enjoy each lesson…over time, I have become more motivated and look forward to each lesson. Italki is the perfect solution for someone like me, who sat in two years of Japanese classroom college courses (all A’s!) but had little opportunity to practice or use what I supposedly learned. I wish I had discovered italki years earlier. I love my tutors: Aikiko-san, Hana-san, and Rin-san…they understand my goals and are committed to helping me achieve them. I am extremely happy. Thank you to my tutors and italki!

  4. 1/5I adore my teacher. I HATE italki.

The platform has always been ridiculously non-intuitive, just incredibly difficult to use. After the last “upgrade” and re-design, it is almost unusable. (Although one good thing is that it is now possible for students to copy the teacher’s notes to another application for use outside of italki…an excellent advantage. Before, there was a text bubble for each comment the teacher made, and you’d have to copy every single one of those comments individually. There is no explanation of how to access this feature, though. I just found it on my own when I was trying to figure something else out. 🤬) The FAQ results give you “solutions” that do not correspond to any kind of reality. It took me 30 minutes to figure out how to buy a package of lessons. The interface kept trying to get me to buy a sample lesson, not the package. I pressed “continue,” just to see what would happen and found the way to purchase the package. The whole interface is just a HUGE, frustrating waste of time… If I weren’t absolutely devoted to my own teacher, I’d have bailed a long time ago. Terrible, terrible, terrible. Grrrr. Oh, and the thing I think I hate the most is what I call the Duolinguification of the site. I don’t want nudges to study or awards for being consistent with my meetings with my teacher. I fled Duolingo because all the gamification was a huge distraction from serious learning. Duolingo is a game. My sessions with my teacher are serious. I am learning a ton. I am gaining confidence. Hey, italki…Don’t try to compete with Duolingo. You are something different. Market THAT.

  5. 5/5Love it

I’ve been using italki for some time now, and overall it’s been a really helpful platform for language learning. The main idea, connecting learners with native teachers for 1-on-1 lessons, is fantastic, and when you find the right tutor, the experience can be truly valuable and motivating. I also appreciate the variety of teachers and the flexibility in scheduling, which makes it easier to fit lessons into a busy routine. It’s definitely one of the strengths of the platform. That said, there are still a few areas where the app could improve. The updated Classroom is a nice step forward, but sometimes the experience isn’t as smooth as expected. I’ve had occasional minor lags or small technical hiccups during lessons. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it can be a bit distracting. The interface is generally easy to use, though in some places it could feel a bit more modern and intuitive, especially when managing lessons and messages. Also, since there are so many teachers, it can take a bit of time to find the perfect match, but once you do, it’s absolutely worth it Overall, it’s a great platform with a lot of potential, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it continues to improve.
