  1. 5/5Fun app for learning HSK or high-use words

This is a very user-friendly app that runs natively on both iPad and iPhone, making it both more pleasant to use and more accessible for people with visual impairment than iPhone-only apps. There are a variety of activities to learn the words, so it’s not repetitive and boring like purely flash card apps. I love the way the developers included details like color coding for the tones to help remember them with the word. Both mainland and traditional Chinese are available as well as one of my favorite features - a simplified vs. traditional character comparison game - great for folks who want to learn both like I do. The pro version is expensive but I waited for a push notification with a discount and am really enjoying the extra features. I still wish I didn’t have to pay for all the HSK levels separately though. The free version has a lot of functionality for those who don’t want to pay. Highly recommend for those who want to practice HSK vocab in a way that’s more fun and less tedious than other methods. There’s so many different things to do here to keep you motivated and seeing the words in these different contexts really helps with memory.

  2. 5/5Amazing Source

This app is honestly underrated. I heard about it from a youtuber that i watch when studying myself. i looked it up and honestly fell in love. most of the features are available for free with some exceptions for the lessons and other items. it genuinely is worth it and if you can afford the pro version please go for it. it genuinely is one of the most helpful apps i’ve used and it’s so nice because the pronunciations don’t appear to be done by an AI. it sounds like a genuine person speaking which is awesome because no one wants to sound like a robot. i’d say my main issue is that there’s no like real progress done with the lessons. you can basically just go through whichever lesson you want and in any order and i find that it makes it hard to really follow anything. especially since once you start getting to the game section of the app, it will just show you random vocab with no real progression or unlocking new words or anything like that. i find it overwhelming so in terms of actually learning the characters i would recommend a different source and then heading towards the game section. other than that this app is 10/10!

  3. 5/5Phenomenal, thorough HSK1 lessons

There’s alot on this app, and it’s a good thing. The enormous varieties of games/quiz formats mean I can test and learn characters in many different contexts, which helps me learn them a lot better. (Though I use Duolingo a lot to supplement, it’s very easy to fall into pattern recognition with their lessons and not learn the material as solidly.) Free content is sufficient, but I happily paid the one time $18 (thank you for not making it subscription!!), well worth it for the dozens of study materials/lessons, quizzes/games, well structured dictionary, and easy to use and appealing design. Incredibly thorough educational material that’s well written and tested. Look forward to graduating to HSK2 next so I can opt for the next app!

  4. 4/5May 2022 Update was awful

This app is great for learning Chinese. It has many features that let you learn vocabulary, sentences, grammar, and characters. And the pay version is a one-time purchase and not subscription which is great. That said, they just updated the game and changed their character writing feature to make it more “user friendly”. It is clear that they got someone with terrible handwriting to write the hanzi and now they are forcing learners who want to use this feature to adopt this same terrible handwriting. The proportions are all wrong, there are incorrect strokes (left leaning that should be right, right leaning that should be left, that sort of thing). And to top it all off, there doesn’t seem to be a way to turn off the visible strokes so you can practice from memory - a feature the old version had. I really like this app series as a whole, but this update was awful. Please fix this feature!

  5. 4/5Good comprehensive app for learning Mandarin by HSK level.

I liked this app enough I subscribed to the pro version which gives you access to the hanzi handwriting practice and a few other study games I haven’t tried yet. This is the only place in the whole app where there are some glitches, namely missing strokes in the pattern you’re supposed to follow and sometimes the app fails to recognize when you’ve drawn a stroke already. That being said, the rest of the app is great and just got an update to match the new HSK leveling. The developers are working to complete the additional vocabulary and it’s a well made app for all ages mid elementary school to adult literacy levels. If the hand writing section was improved it would be beyond 5 stars and the best mandarin app I’ve downloaded. Looking forward to working up through the levels!

  5. 2/5

Voice tests are too strict at beginner level. Should be single characters only before moving to sentences. I was stuck on getting past 叫 for extreme long time. While Google translate got me 1st , 2nd, 3rd time. I tried on different tablet and got same issue. There is no need to frustrate newbies in hsk level 1. Also some words in lessons assume you already know them.

    • HSK 3.0 (2026) update We’ve fully updated the HSK 3.0 vocabulary to the new official 2026 word lists. HSK 3.0 (2026) replaces the previous HSK 3.0 (2021) lists inside the app. This first update is available for HSK1, HSK2 and HSK3. The remaining HSK levels will arrive in the coming weeks. • Your progress has been migrated Your HSK 3.0 (2021) progress has been adapted to the new vocabulary: words, sentences, games, mistakes, exams, unlocked flashcards and saved word lists. Your custom word lists are kept, and each word now shows the level it belongs to in the new 2026 lists. Important! Your progress may have changed: we’ve added many new sentences for HSK1 2.0 and 3.0, so some percentages may go down because there is now more content to complete. • New HSK 3.0 (2026) study content The new HSK 3.0 (2026) lists include around 600 words that were not part of HSK if we compare all HSK1-HSK6 levels with the 2.0 and 3.0 (2021) lists. We’ve added new example sentences, around 300 of them, and reorganized many existing sentences between levels. We’ve also added new and improved lessons for HSK 3.0 (2026), especially in HSK1, with lessons reorganized between levels to better match the new vocabulary. The dictionary now includes more than 1,800 “No HSK” words, which you can add to your lists and practice in games. Confusing Words has also been updated with more similar words and reviewed relationships. • Audios and flashcards More than 600 new native audios have been added for HSK 3.0 (2026) words, and all newly added sentences include native audio too. We’ve added new flashcards for words that did not have an image yet. Many current flashcards have been improved with clearer, more representative images. • Games and practice Stroke Order keeps improving: the next stroke is now shown in a different color to guide your writing more clearly. Write Pinyin now marks mistakes in red so you can spot errors faster. Write Pinyin, Sentence Structure, Pronunciation and Write the Story now offer hints after several failed attempts. Pronunciation has better help messages, answer normalization and sentence behavior. Multi Option adds a new setting to hide hanzi for an extra challenge. Listening Stories now lets you show the translation again from the help button. We’ve also improved the experience when completing tasks in the Guided Course, so you can move more easily to the next activity. • General polish Saved word lists can now be sorted by level.
