  1. 5/5Great app, works perfectly

I was a subscriber to the print edition for some time, but as an American it felt wasteful to have a magazine mailed to me from across the ocean when there was another way -to say nothing of the high yet understandable subscription rate for overseas subscribers. The app is just simply perfect, and provides the educated level of history writing I’ve become accustomed to without causing me to fret over my carbon footprint. I can access the publication across my devices, and receive the periodical on the day of publishing without having to wait for it to come in the mail. Technology is amazing, and I’m glad HistoryToday is leveraging it.

  2. 3/5Version 1.7.3 - No table of contents and inconsistent sharing functionality

I loaded this version in the hope of solving my problem: The previous version would not allow the saving of articles to other apps (such as Instapaper). Now oddly enough, in some month's issues it will and in others it won't. Mysterious and a bit annoying. Also, there is no longer a table of contents in any of the issues I've looked at (about 7-8 across 3-4 years). This is obviously even more challenging than the other problem. The only solution I've found is to go to the website to find the contents then go back to the app and find the story. Could be worse I know, but most apps don't make you take these steps. As always, great content and when you can find what you want the pages are really nice but the app is a little hard to use.

  3. 5/5Looking Back with Pleasure

The essays in History Today are both erudite and inviting. This journal was the first to which I ever subscribed, having first learned to love it many years ago thanks to the encouragement of my father-in-law, one of the two weekly book-reviewers for the New York Times. The essays are invariably interesting, well-written, and enjoyable. I learn a lot but also have fun. As scholar of the Renaissance I find myself learning lots and lots about other periods and the intellectual expansion is a pleasure. Don’t stop! Anne Lake Prescott

  4. 4/5great app but subscription options are confusing.

the app is great to use but subscription options are confusing, so my comments are more about subscription process than app. Print subscription with included digital access (this app), digital subscription, digital single issues, and then optional archive access with a web site that is only available with archive purchase makes it very difficult to know what you bought. For example there is a 3 cheap issues print option with flow-on to regular subscription which seems not to flow on, although the included digital access does. this is not an issue in the app, just the magazine subscription process. it appears that under the subscription you get acess to current and older issues (but no archive), but they may go away when subscription expires. when I download an older issue, i don’t know if included or I am actually making a purchase. it is all just too complex. i have other digital subscriptions (e.g. Ancient Warfare magazine) which are easier to use.

  5. 5/5Excellent

I look forward to receiving History Today every month. The variety of the articles encompasses a great swath of time and space. I like being exposed to all the different views. I get my mind changed on all sorts of topics. History Today teaches how to think about history.
