  1. 5/5Fantastic tool as is, or to build into a larger web system

With the 1.3 release, GPS Log now has the ability to send a KMZ file of your visits to your email address, or upload KML files and thumbnails of your images to a script running on your server. This means it's become a fantastic trip blogging tool, you can easily get a file that you can view in Google Earth or view laid out in Google Maps on your own site, uploaded from wherever you can get coverage. And not have to have network coverage while you're gathering data, or worry about the battery life issues of a full-time tracker. I'll be using it to put trip reports of hikes, bike rides, and road trips on my weblog. However, I think the applications for this go far beyond just a richer blogging experience; this tool should get integrated into maintenance systems, security routines, and other places where people need rich interfaces to providing location information. Any situation where people need to keep track of what they were doing when. Other than that, it does exactly what it says: Lets you tap the screen and log information about a visit to a location, with pictures and notes, so it lets you keep track of where you've been and what you've done without needing to be running all the time (good for battery life), and doesn't require that you be connected to a network while you're doing so (good for remote areas or foreign travel where the roaming fees would otherwise kill you).

  2. 5/5Wonderful tool!

How have I never reviewed this app? We've been using GPSL almost since it was first released, and have come to rely on it for more uses than I would have imagined. We began by "spiking" locations we hiked: getting GPS locations and photos of trailheads and facilities, along with hours and impressions. Quickly that evolved to spiking restaurants and coffee shops, including hours and photos of menus and receipts, to give us a complete snapshot of a meal experience. Photos can be saved at a variety of resolutions (including full-size, it's a user setting so don't worry about the bad review!) The developer has been incredibly responsive to requests and has greatly expanded the capabilities of his application. Each new release has enhanced our use of GPSL. We recently returned to the US from a trip to Canada, where we successfully spiked without data for the first time, and with no problem. The initial fix will take a while (if you've moved thousands of miles, as we did) but after that each successive spike found a GPS lock in less than 30 seconds. We now have some of our favorite locations in the Canadian Rockies spiked without using a second of cellular data, and while miles from anywhere along a hiking trail. Seeing all of your spikes on a map, being able to export and share your spikes with friends are all features of this application. The upcoming release, 3.0, will also greatly expand the capabilities yet again. This has been a lot of fun to grow with, as the app's new features keep adding to our use of the program. Visit the support website, and look at the forum to see how many of the users utilize GPS Log. The varied use-cases are limited only by people's imagination. It's a blast!

  3. 5/5Simple and great

All I needed was the ability to capture photos of water sampling locations in the field, and to record the location, time, and name of the sample. Sounds easy, but it took me a long time to discover this app. It meets all my needs, and unlike other less than ideal options, out there, this app allows multiple export options, plus cloud storage that doesn't crake over my data and force it into some proprietary format or social media platform. Thanks for not doing that!

  4. 1/5Did not work as described

I bought this before going on safari in Africa so I could tag locations where I would not have any data service, however I was unable to get it to tag ANY location whatsoever. Highly disappointing, as I was going to use the data to help me tag photos from my digital SLR. Back in the states it seems to function as soon as I turn it on, but in Africa it did nothing, even when I was on a mobile network. The whole reason why I spent $10 was because it was described to work with no data connection. I find it hard to believe that throughout all the wide open plains of the Serengeti that I would be unable to pick up a GPS signal, thus the 1 star rating...

  5. 5/5Love it!

I've traveled across Europe with this app and it has been fantastic for recording everywhere I've been and it lets me backup my locations online in case my device crashes. I also like that when I don't have Internet access, it lets me record the location using the longtitude and latitude of the physical address. I haven't tried the "share" function yet to see if my friends can see my locations but that's next on my list.
