  1. 3/5Crashed

I took a risk despite the low review average and bought this app. There’s no spaced repetition, and when I got past about six or seven cards the app just crashed. It worked the second time I launched it but I don’t like that we only either have sound on when cards appear or off. Why can’t we tap to play the sound? If we could do that we could repeat it and practice our pronunciation, and we could test ourselves by saying it before we hear the audio. I already own Anki and have a couple of N5 decks, plus my own custom deck. I still wanted to try the Genki app because I thought it would be good since it aligns with the book’s lessons, but everyone would probably be better off just finding Genki vocabulary decks for Anki.

  2. 4/5It is worth it overall.

When I say it is worth it, I mean the app itself. It is much better than writing thousands of flashcards either from making them or the purchase of them (the paper and time to write the flash cards with minimal mistake.) in the long run, it is alright. I left out one star out of the five because of the price. It is too expensive. Some other reviews mentioned that this app should be free - especially with the purchase of the book. I agree to some degree. But if there has to be a price, I still don’t think it should be that expensive. Comparing to other reviews I’ve seen, at least some of the additional vocabulary IS in the flashcards. It’s just that the flashcards for each set is what should be known for that lesson. The additional vocab is for one, additional, but just not required YET. What I mean is, at least some of that earlier additional vocab is indeed covered in this Genki app, just in a later set. There is also sound, example sentences, and the cards are scrambled nicely every time. I like it.

  3. 3/5A lot can be improved

Make the app free with textbook purchase or at the very least 99 cents. Has sound problems. I understand you have to use headphones but sometimes I have to toggle the app to get it to work. Fix the sound problems and add phone speakers to sound please! Good things: I don’t have to make flashcards and it seems like a alright study tool. Just fix the problems above and it’s a good study app.

  4. 5/5Problems with sound

Great app, should be 5 stars — but the sound function (crucial for me) only works sometimes. Sound cuts out, and restarting or redownloading app makes no difference. Then sound might reappear for awhile…then go away. If this bug was fixed — 5 stars ! UPDATE: the sound works, as long as you keep the phone’s “silent mode” button OFF. This is not intuitive, and should be made clear in the app…!!!

  5. 5/5Better than making your own Anki

This is app is good for what it does: a way for you to save time from making your own Anki or flash cards. Because honestly - if you made your own Anki, it’ll be the same vocab. This app at least saves you time from making the vocab that’s already on here. So if you save time studying or making an Anki deck without vocabs from here.
