1. 4/5Indispensable…but the “News” is not.

   I love this app. Love love love it. The Highlights and Basics, Tests, DDx, and Tx tabs under the Quick Reference sections of specific diseases—along with a pharmaceutical dictionary—are indispensable. I truly feel this app makes daily clinical practice easier, smoother, and safer for patients and providers. The ONLY gripe I have about this app is that the News pops up throughout the day, prompting me to click on Headlines before I search for what I need to know, and this is on the PAID version. You are supposed to be able to search for what you need to know from this obligatory News screen. And that would be fine. If it worked. But 9/10 it doesn’t, you can’t, and the app crashes/stalls. I’ve emailed twice about this through the app and received personalized replies, but I could tell they were meaningless…and the issue still hasn’t been resolved. The app is otherwise perfect and if it were a matter of resolving this “issue”/improving the functionality of the app or risk losing the functionality currently available, I would not risk it. That’s how much I value this app.

2. 5/5Fast and Efficient.

   It’s quick and easy to use. More detail is available under diagnosis and treatment approaches. The highlight and basics give a excellent overview of the disease subject. Medication guide gives accurate cost and links with good RX for online discount vouchers. References and sources are available for further review/reading. Calling or texting for help / trouble shooting is easy. Epoc staff are courteous friendly, timely and efficient. The case vignettes provide excellent examples of patient presentations. The material is easy to navigate and is a helpful tool to prepare lectures and presentations on the go for resident education. Occasionally there are some disease topics not easy to find or lumped in with a broader category of pathological states [i.e., H. Pylori infections vs PUD]. The Differential Diagnosis (ddx) section is also and excellent clinic tool for deciphering through unclear cases with ambiguous patient symptoms or when it is necessary to explore other etiologies. The Ddx lists key differentiating features —that help to rule-in or rule-out alternative competing diagnoses— including diagnostics [lab, imaging, & other tests], symptoms and physical exam findings. Overall I find this app (iPhone and iPad), and epocrates online to be a very helpful tool. It does not replace journal subscriptions, years of experience/ gestalt, or subspecialty consultations. For education, it should be used together with other sources such as Harrison’s, board reviews sources and review of original research articles.

3. 1/5Totally useless to professionals!

   I try to refrain from leaving negative reviews but this is the second time I've been left "stuck" without an answer to a question relying on Epocrates' mobile app. I am a paying customer and I feel that the same quality that goes into your online version should be integrated into your useless mobile app. As a pharmacist I sometimes have questions about dosage forms, medication strengths, formulation types, etc etc. Case in point, today I needed to quickly determine which form of olopatidine is designed for once daily dosing v. twice daily dosing. Simple stuff. I type in Pataday. The mobile app shows "Pataday". I click on it just to be fed to a blank page that says "now OTC"!? Great, where's the other information. So I search generic name where it has so truncated the information that you can't really use it as needed. For example, it lists generic name then both strengths of olopatidine but doesn't differentiate which correlates to the brand, and in this case, drug strength you're looking for. It may sound trivial but this happens often using their mobile site. And don't get me started on finding pK info and any meaningful pregnancy and lactation information on the web app. I really think that for paying users you should create a web version of the online Epocrates platform. I found that very useful in pharmacy school, on rotations, etc. I need that as a mobile friendly version!

4. 5/5UPDATE: Graduated NP, from IN SCHOOL/ OUTPATIENT SETTING REVIEW (OGBYN, PEDS, ADULT & GERIATRIC):

   I am a Family Nurse Practitioner Student with only one final rotation left before graduation. I have been using Plus Version now for OGBYN, PEDS, ADULT & GERIATRIC cases, and because Epocrates was nice enough to give a student discount I felt compelled to give an honest review, either way. IN SCHOOL/ OUTPATIENT SETTING REVIEW: Epocrates is a HUGE time saving, evidence-based resource, that provides relevant information at all points, that can be used for safe and effective patient care management. While it helps to have a general idea of what the Primary Dx of the patient will be, even if not specific S/Sx can be used as search topics. This provides a list of options that can be used to narrow down Differential, until finally arriving at a Prognosis that best fits. It then provides options from the diagnostic process (e.g. Summary, Differential, Common Labs, etc.), all ranked in level of relevance and/or priority (ALL Supported by References that can be clicked on to use as support if needed-GREAT FOR STUDENTS!!!). While there are many practitioners using the free version of Epocrates just for its Medication Checker alone, the Paid Version offers the above, “+Plus” more, at any point in the patient care process, and across all ages of the lifespan. Before giving my recommendation please know that my loyalty is to my patients, not to Epocrates, so if findings were otherwise they would have been listed here as such. And so with this, RECOMMENDATION: I DO HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS APP FOR BOTH STUDENT AND PRACTITIONER ALIKE (Paid version especially). I hope this helps everyone (students, providers, and Epocrates), as it is intended! E.J.

5. 5/5Love Epocrates App

   Epocrates is my go to App because it is clear and concise and to the point and I can find what I need quickly. I also have another App that is very thorough and shows you studies etc... but personally when I’m taking care of patients I don’t have time to read a study- I need clear, simple and quick answers and that is what Epocrates offers. I’ve used it since NP school and haven’t found anything else that I like better. I’ve worked in the primary care/urgent care setting. The only thing that I would want that Epocrates doesn’t offer (I don’t believe) is A little more info on IV drugs for instance “this should be a slow push over 2 minutes”... obviously we don’t do that in an outpatient setting but when I worked in the hospital those extra tips would have been helpful- I would feel like Epocrates truly had it all of they added that!

   Information is easy to find and up to date. However, recently added soonsored ads make it hard to quickly get to the information I need. I pay too much for Epocrates to navigate ads. It is yet another barrier in my day. I am beyond disappointed.

   There was a time where this was the best drug app. I have been using it for 25y. I hate that now half the time when I open it I get the spinning circle of death waiting for the app to update. Takes at least 30s. Why can't it update randomly during the day when it's not open so that I can actually do patient care in a timely fashion? also, I use it as a drug reference. I have zero interest in any news articles that it has. It can't even do its basic function job.
