1. 5/5Awesome educational streaming

   Man, Domestika is awesome. TLDR; the material is better than anything else out there at the price point, and more professionally presented to boot. For context to this review, I’m a native English speaker with a pretty loose grasp of Spanish (ie., not enough to follow a conversation but maybe enough to know when a word has been obviously translated incorrectly in closed captions). Almost all the courses I’ve purchased are in Spanish (some in Portuguese). I was reluctant to purchase courses when I knew I’d need to follow along with translated captions, since I thought not being able to focus entirely on the on screen instruction might slow my uptake of the material. I’m glad I went ahead and took the plunge on that first course, ‘cause I’m hooked. While I do need to occasionally mentally re-translate the captions - eg., “animar” gets auto-translated to “cheer up” rather than the context-appropriate “animate” - this isn’t the fault of the instructors or Domestika, but a translation algorithm, and it’s not a barrier to learning. The instructors are phenomenal. I’m focusing on courses in hand drawn animation, composition, and character design, and the material and the delivery of it has all been totally spectacular. You can find courses on other websites that are in English and cost the same, but the quality of the instruction just isn’t on par with what’s on Domestika. This fact has even prompted me to revisit learning conversational Spanish using Duolingo, in hopes that eventually I’ll be able to absorb the material without the distraction of the captions.

2. 5/5Technical problems abound

   I’ve bought 11 courses. I would get excited to see them on Facebook ads. I’ve been too busy to even do the courses. I watched the first one more than actually took it. Figured I could get back to it when time permitted. When I finally found some time this week to sit down and start a course, the whole setup seemed different. I guess they’ve changed the app in the weeks I’ve been otherwise occupied. Now none of my courses play right on my iPad Pro. They start and then they go off track and drag. I’m using the latest app version, so that’s not the problem. I’m gonna want my money back if I can’t figure out how to access what I paid for. I won’t buy any more courses until then, either. What’s gonna happen, if Domestika can’t get it together, is someone will come and do what they’ve done here better. I love the concept, the brightly lit videos and the variety of topics and artists! But not the frustration. I’ve also been bothered by the very poor translations from Spanish to English. So, I’ve tried to avoid the Spanish language courses and opt for the few in English. Get it together, please, Domestika! I want to LOVE you, not feel regret that I ever saw you go by in my Facebook feed.

3. 3/5Great Courses *but* App lackluster in usability and basic features

   I love the Domestika courses. At the time of writting this, I ve boutght 34 of them. But the more I buy, the more frustrated I get. There is no way to easily search for your courses in your library. They are organize in a way that only makes sense to the developers and not the user. The best I can guess is that the courses are organized by the date they were launched. That is of not consequence to me, the user. To me it makes more sense to organize them either by purchase date, or better yet, by topic or alphabetical order. Every time I;m looking for a course I have to fish it from the whole list. Worse yet is that you can;t even search your courses, which at least would ease the pain. You can search the whole library, but not the ones you own. There is no way to filter them either. The other major issue for me is that there is no easy way to get to the last course you were watching. If I quit the app and want to get back to my course, I have to fish it again in my course library, which can get very confusing if it was a while and you have several courses on the topic. At least your progress is kept within the course (phew). Something like having the last few courses you were watching shown first in your library, followed by rest in a user relevant scheme would do a lot to make this app more usable. Domestika should invest in adding UX designers and practitioners to their design teams. The lackluster usability shows they only have coders and software developers in their design team. At the moment, I don;t feel compelled to buy more courses from Domestika since trying to watch the ones I already own feels me with frustration, and at this point, even rage.

4. 3/5Please fix!

   While I have been enjoying every lesson since I’ve started, I am totally tired of and completely burnt out about the fact that this app crashes every single time I use it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fine while I’m watching. But no combination of turning off or closing the app or pausing will stop it from completely crashing as soon as I stop using it for the day. Every single time I open the app, it’s frozen, and I have to restart my iPad. If I’m involved in a lesson and I have to pause it, and walk away, if I’m gone more than 15 minutes, when I come back the app has crashed and I have to restart my iPad in order to continue the lesson. Other than this continual annoying, irritating, distracting crap, I have been enjoying the app. Please fix this. It’s very unprofessional to constantly crash when I stop, pause, or turn off the iPad. I’m tired of going through this every single day. My current course may be the last one as I plan to seek a more stable format for learning unless this is fixed. Also, since I am not a native Spanish speaker, I often have to read the lessons. When you put the English in boxes that are positioned over the artwork that I am trying to watch, I have no alternative. Turn off the closed captioning? Yes. I have to watch multiple times in order to understand the lessons. How about paying attention to where you put the captioning? I don’t feel like these lessons need to be dubbed, as I enjoy hearing the lessons and I am also learning Spanish as I learn how to paint. But when you position the words right over what I’m trying to look at I can’t see what’s going on. In most cases I’ve encountered so far, the close captioning could be at the top of the page. That would prevent the visuals being obscured. Thanks.

5. 3/5I feel like a kid, again..

   I feel like a kid, again. So many courses, that remind you of your childhood. When you find yourself dreaming about the person you might be: from being a famous painter like Van Gogh, to that glue-behind the scenes in the art props department, to writing that novel that changes lives —not just your own. All I missing is skateboard, my posters of Harrison Ford and some guy from one of those teen magazines, and 80’s pop -purple eyeliner. And, when you think it’s all over, then you throw in the newest software that you thought there was no-way you could make a business out of it, and suddenly that dream that seemed like it already past, is now just day or two away, like the morning sun—you never know what you going to learn about yourself with Domestika. I feel like I’m a new person, and I don’t want to get off the rocket that seems to be beyond all that I know in this universe, this world, …All you have to his push play (aka PLUS) and that theme song that transfers you into another you is just a PLUS away / galaxy away. Hit the play button Sir Elton John. You just never know, what soundtrack might pop up on Domestika station—Cue the music Mr. Elton John. I’m ready to rocket out of here. (Rocket Man / —-Grrl…..)
