  1. 5/5Packed with Useful Features and a Beautiful UI

Crouton is by far the best recipe organizer app on the App Store. I’ve tried other options and they’re either missing an important feature or the interface is cumbersome to use. Crouton has a simple UI that is simple and intuitive. There’s more advanced features within the app but it gives the user the choice to use them. Most importantly, it’s satisfying to use and I can’t say the same for the other options. There’s small details that show there was a lot of thought put into the user experience. The grocery list syncing with the Reminders app feature is a very nice implementation that I’ve never seen before and found very useful. The same applies for the scaling feature, which sounds very simple but can be a huge time saver. The hands-free mode is another very useful feature that I have yet to see anywhere else. It allows you to swipe through the directions in a recipe using blinking expressions and opening your mouth. However, I did notice it was inconsistent at times. While it could use some work, I still found it very impressive, especially in pinch when your hands are covered in food. Overall, I’m very happy with Crouton and I’m excited to see any further improvements. That being said, I’m very satisfied with the current release and am glad to support it.

  2. 5/5Why I would miss my phone…

If I lost my phone, I could find other ways to call or email people, but this app is indispensable! I use this app every single day. I love how I can copy recipes I find online and easily paste them in this app. Also, I just scanned a recipe from a magazine into this app! Who would think it could be possible? I figured out that you have to scan ingredients and steps separately, but the learning curve was low. Also, you have to proofread, because as miraculous as this feature is, it still needs the user to help it out a little. I think there are features on this app I don’t even know how to use, and some day I’ll get around to trying them, but in the meantime I’m going to scan the recipes I use out of my cookbooks and then get rid of them! But a note to the developer: please don’t leave users high and dry like the developer of my other recipe app: I can’t access my recipes on that app any more because they won’t update the app for use in updated iOS. Such a bummer because inputting them was way more work than for Crouton!

  3. 5/5Wonderful independent recipe-organizing app!

Our family LOVES this recipe organizer app. We were looking for a platform that lets us easily share all our recipes with multiple family members, and add new ones easily by importing directly from a website-- Crouton can even scan in a recipe from a printed cookbook page (although it does have difficulty with handwritten recipes). Other great features let us organize recipes into folders, print or email them as PDFs, add photos and notes, and search keywords (including ingredients, not just recipe titles). We don't use our "recipe box" for grocery shopping, so I can't say how well that component functions. But Crouton is PERFECT for our needs, works great and we love using it. I also appreciate that it's developed by an independent programmer who over time continues to tinker with adding new features and improvements. I've recommended Crouton to several other people who also tell me they are glad to have found it! It's absolutel one of most-used apps, I probably open it every day......Thanks Crouton!

  4. 5/5Game Changing Recipe Manager

This app has been a game changer for our family. We struggle with keeping track with the recipes we like, knowing which ingredients to buy and update, and which nights of the week we feel motivated to actually cook. We started to default to a few basic and routine meals that meant dining out was an easy out. This app has changed the game. - We already utilized the Reminder app on iOS to share a family grocery shopping list. This continuity was great and having the ability to cross between apps is amazing. Especially when we can shop for the recipes! - the meal planner is a major upgrade from using a shared calendar event. This allows us to choose or have a random recipe chosen and then the decision is made. No more last minute “lets just go out to eat instead” because we bought the ingredients, know its a meal we chose and we love. - The AI Import for recipes is amazing. We have so many recipes typed out in the notes app, saved on instagram, in physical cook books (including my grandmothers 1950 recipes that I care so much about). We spent a day just taking pictures from books - start with the picture of the food picture if it has it, and then the AI takes wildly typed recipes and makes it a simple format to utilize. - I can probably type 4-5 more great thoughts on this app and I cant wait for the companion thermometer from Combustion Inc. to arrive. This app makes me want to cook again and not just default to eating out.

  5. 5/5The best recipe app with NO subscription!!

I almost never review apps, but Crouton is special. This is as independent-developer as apps get: it's just one guy. He saw a gap, figured out how to fill it, and single-handedly delivered a solution. Pretty incredible. But cool story aside, the app itself is fantastic! It's full of great features to facilitate easy organization and accessibility, like tag-based smart folders, a "play" mode for viewing recipes in step-by-step fullscreen, different options for color-coding steps — I love the "rainbow" setting, the randomly-assorted colors make reading/tracking through a recipe much easier on my brain — and a grocery list that auto-syncs with the Reminders iOS app. It's cute yet functional, simple yet robust, and overall very impressive. But in the end, what made me choose Crouton over the dozens of other apps on the market: IT'S NOT A SUBSCRIPTION!! In this capitalist nightmare — where companies force you to rent the products & services that facilitate the most basic facets of your life for upwards of $10/month a piece — this is an app you can still actually *buy*, once, and then you just own it? Forever? You don't have to ongoingly lease your own recipes?? Crazy concept, I know. But it's that kind of business integrity that made this app the unequivocal winner in my book. Keep doin' what you're doin', Devin! You're the best!
