  1. 3/5Blocks content, but too much

I am an adult using Canopy to block content from myself as I combat addiction. It does a good job blocking adult content online, and for that reason it is satisfactory. However, it also gets in the way of normal internet usage. Connecting to public WiFi in which a pop-up sign-in is required often doesn’t work. All kinds of non-explicit images, videos, and websites are either censored or block for reasons that I cannot decipher. Allowing certain URL’s doesn’t always work. The Reddit app is only half-functional as the search function is completely broken, and I often cannot vote, comment, or sometimes even open a post (pressing anywhere on certain posts does literally nothing, while other posts are fine). Canopy does not block content on the actual Twitter and Instagram apps—they instead have a proprietary version of these apps which don’t work smoothly. Many streaming services won’t work while connected to Canopy on the computer, including both Netflix and Paramount+. If I did not have the power through the Parent app to turn off Canopy for myself when I need to do a normal life task on the internet, I would have gotten too frustrated to continue using it. But for children up to teenage years, this does indeed block what it’s supposed to.

  2. 5/5Great App! & Affordable!

Canopy has worked very well for us. We were using a different app for over 3 years and come to find out there was SO many ways around it and it was not working for us as a family of littles and a spouse with a PA. That other app was not blocking much of anything. Canopy does EVERYTHING I need it to. The tracking app shows me what apps are being used all day, it will send me notifications if someone in my household is trying to ask permission into an app or page that might have content that is not under the guidelines I’ve set as being okay. You can block websites and apps from being opened. The app controles the phone not JUST a web browser like the other app we had. I LOVE LOVE this app and I wish I would have found it sooner, we’ve used this app for over a year now. I’ve only had one issue which was when we switched phones, but customer service was amazing and helped remove a phone and add a new one. I feel good about having this app for my family. We use it on 2 phones and 1 iPad. I recommend it to everyone looking for an app that will help their family from the dangers of the internet world. It can block social media, gambling, TV streaming, violence, messenger apps, etc, you pick what you want to block. There are thing my family will ask me to unblock and it’s an easy step to give permission. The parental control is wonderful! Definitely worth every penny!

  3. 1/5PLEASE READ THIS!

As a kid, I don’t write bad reviews just because it’s a parental control app. I am writing bad reviews because this app has flaws. I am on an iPad. I use the ecosia browser (a browser that plants trees). When I go to this browser, it does not load. This never happened before. My parents have tried other apps before this, and they had the same problem. Both my brother and I know the VPN or some other thing is messing up our devices. However, my parents talked to the app developers and they say there should be no issues. Our parents accused us (falsely!!!) of lying. This should be fixed. 😡 Also, there is nothing wrong with parents having controls on their child’s device. However, I researched this app, and apparently it allows parents to have access to view everything. Children should be able to have privacy!!! But parents think that whenever a child keeps a secret, it’s because they are doing something wrong. This is false. I am upset because parents should allow kids to have privacy. BUT they should be able to view texts, photos, and search history. I feel (like many kids do) that my parents hover over me. I do not like that parents can view everything and I also feel that this makes me feel distant from my parents. It feels like an invasion on me. Kids should be allowed to have some things be secret. I think this should be a normal parental control app and only monitor texts, photos, and history. And block inappropriate content, obviously. Not view everything! 😡 Other than this, this is a good parental control app.

  4. 1/5Good-ish for addict, horrible for many reasons

My friend installed this on my phone so I wouldn’t use porn. At first, I was really impressed by its porn blocking capabilities. Much, much more powerful than other porn blockers. My addict attempts to remove it failed. However, after a couple weeks, I learned many loopholes to access porn. In fact, the easiest way was searching something on Google and clicking through images until I find a blurred image that lets me click view image and it shows the porn. The social media app blocking was also impressive, that worked well. However, the loopholes were bad once I learned my way around the system. But the reason I give 2 stars is because after 2 weeks of having this on my phone, my dad sent me a screenshot that all our data has been used up for this month. I look in my data usage on my phone and this app shows up. I costed my parents extra money because the VPN was so broken and wouldn’t allow the wifi to work. I’ve seen other reviews years old mention this. Oh also, I have a truist bank account and it literally doesn’t let me check my checking account. It says it needed an update so I went to the App Store and it was fully updated. Disabled canopy and I could check it just fine. Maybe fix your app. Oh lemme come back and add it ate 22% of my battery daily. Changing to 1 star. Oh lemme come back and add again, after I removed it from my laptop it caused problems with my memory card and I had to diagnose and clean my pc for it to work properly. This was after I uninstalled the software and restarted my laptop.

  5. 5/5Parental account works well—quite pleased.

A close friend approached me several months ago and told me he had sifted through various filtering softwares and decided Canopy was the best, and he asked me to manage his account as a parental account. It has worked well since then; I have no complaints, and neither has he. Due to some ongoing, unresolved technical errors with Covenant Eyes, another friend and I have decided to matriculate his account to Canopy, which we will be doing soon. I am no expert, but as a layman in the realms of software and app development, I am impressed. Aside from adding specific websites to the “allowed” list and other activities like that, I have not had a single problem or error since downloading the app. I still have not explored the extended features, but the base product works very well and more consistently than other softwares I’ve used. Unrelated to the software itself—I’ve gotten to know one of the lead staff for Canopy, and I don’t think I’ve ever met someone with quite the same combination of dedication to helping people quit porn forever and the forward-thinking drive to help them do it. I think Canopy is in very good hands going forward, and I will be along for the ride.
