3/5AMAZING
This app is AMAZING. It teaches you everything clearly and I've always been so overwhelmed by japanese for every other method but this is perfect, it starts right from the very basics and helps learn. I checked out german as well (which I'm currently doing on duolingo) and I really appreciate the explanations about exactly how things work. I also love the ability to CHOOSE to go back and redo the problems you did wrong. The text is quite tiny, though. Oftentimes it barely even fills a a tenth of the space of the flashcard. I'm doing this on ipad, not on my phone, because I want it to be better for my eyes but I wish the text could be larger? Also, for the character tracing, sometimes I want to go back to write it again. I don't understand why we can go back for other lessons but not when writing the characters. Okay also I just realized literally only three of these lessons (for japanese, at least) are free. The rest are still paywall locked? I will check back tomorrow and hope that's how this app works... I thought they would unlock once I reached them but nope. That's too little, and I feel really bad giving this app a 3 star review because it's honestly really good but too expensive... I wish you guys the best!

3/5Very solid interface and build, missing some learning features
I really do like this app, it has a very solid design that makes using it fun and rewarding (although unpolished in some places that causes small issues). I think it’s a pretty good curriculum too. However, it seems to be off-paced. You can rip through to JLPT 4 (Japanese level 2) real quickly. The truth is, you haven’t really learned enough to actually be in this category. The app basically confirms this, because after the first level, it seems to almost abandon vocab altogether. It starts dumping new questions on you that you never even learned. You may know how to use what you’re being quizzed on from that lesson, but the new words added make it so you can’t understand where to apply it. Where do you put a particle if you don’t even know if the new words are verbs or nouns? Sometimes they’re defined for you, but a lot of times they’re not or it’s a question where that’s not an option. Vocab practice should be an entirely different section in this app, given detailed attention, separate from grammar practice allowing the user to keep up. The practice section also seems to lack attention. There should be more manual control, allowing you to dump problematic questions so they aren’t recycled over and over in your feed (often times it’s the same questions and the hints to correct wrong answers have nothing to do with what the question is asking). Lessons also seem sometimes rushed, and can be unclear. If you give an example, explain how it works within that example! Overall, I paid for a lifetime subscription to this app, and shouldn’t feel like I’m not able to get out of it what I need if I’m using it diligently every day. I like it and want to use it! Make it better please!

2/5It’s great but it’s starting to make me angry
**Edit: I’m now even MORE annoyed. Not only do they not give enough context or teach you many of the words you’re dealing with, the listening part doesn’t even give you an option to slow the audio down so instead you have to listen to the same audio like 50 times only to still get it wrong because you heard the wrong syllable. I’ve removed yet another star. If it drops to one star I’m deleting the app.** Not gonna lie it started out really great. HOWEVER, all they really focus on is grammar? Which is great and all but if you aren’t using another program to teach yourself the actually kanji and words you’re sorta out of luck. Not to mention the grammar gets really confusing because I’ll have to guess the context of some sentences they want me to solve because they don’t make it very clear or I’ll answer a question with は instead of が or の instead of を and they’ll tell me I’m wrong but when I try I figure out why with their little hint thing it literally doesn’t tell you why those forms were used in that context and tells you info relating to a part of the sentence you didn’t even have an issue with. I’d rate it higher if they fix these issues and tbh if this doesn’t improve I may actually rate this lower because as I’ve said it’s making me very mad cause I feel like I’m guessing my way through most the lessons which isn’t helping me learn much in the long run because I’m resorting to memorizing and praying to god rather than actually LEARNING the info.

4/5Pacing gets weird
A solid app for language learning, though many elements feel borrowed/copied from Duolingo. Using it for Japanese, I've found it useful but noticed that it becomes chaotic starting from N4, where many (more advanced) grammar constructions (auxiliary verbs, causal structures, expressions of intention) start being thrown into sentences without having ever been taught. It's one thing to challenge the learner, but for an app that focuses on grammar, the grammar should be taught progressively, building block on block so that we can jump back to an earlier lesson to refresh a construction if we forget it. Instead, I find myself screenshotting exercises and asking ChatGPT for an explanation, which is not ideal. Similar issue with vocabulary, as N4 starts throwing all sorts of new words at you while simultaneously teaching you new grammar, which feels overwhelming. One solution is to study vocabulary separately, in another resource, but this can break the sync somewhat - it would be easier if Bunpo just gave a reference lesson on new words as you went chapter to chapter.

5/510 Star App!
This is truly an amazing application that I can hardly believe is free. This really deserves to be a paid app. It will walk you through the grammar from JLPT N5 (basic) all the way up to N1 (advanced). The explanations are detailed and yet simple so anyone can follow along. The only prerequisite is that you can read English; this app will even teach you the kana (how to read the Japanese alphabet) if you're completely unfamiliar with the Japanese language. The quizzes after the explanations are both challenging and fun reminding me very much of Duolingo. Your knowledge will be put to the test while you'll be put at great risk of becoming an obsessive Japanese grammar addict like me. Finally, the app allows you to ask questions about the contents which... I'm just speechless about. The time, energy, and kindness put into this app is truly mind-blowing; it'll be obvious to anyone who's studying Japanese or has an interest in Japanese that this app was built only with the Japanese learner's best interest in mind. Did I mention the app is gorgeous and clean as well (swiping though the explanation cards is so satisfying) and it has finally been fixed to work with iOS 10 again! What are you waiting for? Ready to master Japanese?! 🙌🏼 The app's free, there's no sign in required, so you've really got nothing to lose! 🤗
