  1. 1/5Complete downgrade

I have spent countless hours reading hundreds of novels from Bookwalker. It’s nice to have the store and reader integrated into the same app, but that’s where the positives end. On the store side my wishlist list is replaced with a less transparent “favorite” list. No longer have an inbox to tell me about deals, upcoming releases/ preorders in series I enjoy, and the “purchase sequel” list is no where to be seen making it more difficult to continue longer stories. On the reader side the organization is completely gone. No “bookshelves” to customize and manage my books, just a long list with inadequate filters especially when missing “read, reading, and finished” filters. Not sure yet but the books don’t seem to be downloaded to the device and may need a connection to load as you read; not a major issue unless you pre download books when you know you’ll be without a stable connection. Releasing the new app in this condition is ridiculous. It “looks” nice and sleek, but lost all the actual functionality of the previous version. I plan to stay on the old reader for as long as I can. I hope they can fix this clearly unfinished app/site.

  2. 1/5Genuinely awful

The new experience is just awful to use. I didn’t install the new app until I realized my pre purchase from awhile ago could not be loaded on the old app. Upon entering the new app, I was bombarded with ads from all the sales that I don’t care about while trying to log into my account. As I was typing, the banner appeared over my keyboard and then took me away from the login multiple times. It was infuriating. Then once I get into my account, I realize all the customization features are gone. Oh well. I install my new book, and now have to reformat everything to the way I like it. Then I realize that the pictures in light novels don’t actually center properly on the page depending on your settings, and default to the top of your device which is very annoying. I have lots of books from the store previously, but I don’t think I’ll buy anything from bookwalker again unless all this gets fixed, and by then I’ll already have found a better alternative.

  3. 4/5Ups and Downs

New app is mostly better, but still has some growing pains to work through. You’ll probably encounter any issues I’ve seen yourself, so I won’t spend a lot of time on that. What I will say: new app is faster on both old and new devices, has better reading options, and I love the way you can quickly flip through a book if needed. I find it weird that the arrows at the bottom move between volumes, but for certain shorter books this makes a lot of sense. Maybe make it configurable? Having the store be better integrated into the app is nice. That said, I’ll probably try to mainly purchase books from the website, since in app is a little more confusing. Makes sense though, with the cut that Apple takes, they have to do more to profit off the app sales. I’d recommend buying from the website anyway just to support the platform better, rather than giving Apple more pocket change. Excited to see where this app goes!

  4. 3/5Over all Fine. One issue I cannot over look

Over all the new app is fine and the think the good and bad even each over out in the broad strokes. The good: - it does not take multiple attempts to open the app like the old app sometimes took -when you have a book open you can click the title to see the other books in the series and open them from there - seems to load faster than the old app alert from the first time you open a book The bad: - no bookshelf or equivalent in the new app - opens to the store instead of your library, makes a worse user experience as it feels like a storefront first and not an e-reader, the storefront and obnoxious adds should be left for the website Now this is the one problem that I really cannot overlook, the issues with downloading books. As I’ll be at sea for extended period of time with limited internet I like to download media and barriers to this make ethical consumption all the more difficult and is what drives many to turn to piracy. That said the issue I am having is that when I select a title and choose to download if sometimes it will get the “Download scheduled” tag and then never download eve after other things are done downloading, sometimes I can just cancel the scheduled download then redo it and it works then but the real bug is that for a some titles it gets stuck with that scheduled download and I cannot even cancel it.

  5. 3/5Great reading experience, But please add a library or bookshelf, organizational feature

I have been a long-time user of the original BookWalker app, and I’m happy to say that after switching to the new app, All of the books I’ve purchased transferred over and I haven’t had any issues reading them. However, I’ve been purchasing manga through BookWalker for years and have built a very large collection. One feature I loved about the original app was the ability to organize books into custom bookshelves and arrange my library however I wanted. With the new app, there doesn’t seem to be a way to organize your collection, and if you have a large library like I do, it can be difficult to navigate all of your purchased books. This app would be a 10/10 for me if it added a digital bookshelf feature that allowed users to organize their purchased books in whatever way works best for them.

Offline mode got added so I can finally use the app. It will take some getting used to but hopefully it will get as good as the OG app.

  2. 1/5

The UI is very confusing to navigate, even if it looks somewhat cleaner than the old store. But, the biggest frustration for me is reading novels. Every time I stop reading to do something else, the app jumps all the way back to the beginning of the chapter instead of staying on my current page. I can't always sit still to read a whole chapter just because your READING app can't make a bookmark in novels like it does in manga.

  4. 3/5

Offline reading is back - which is a relief! The alternative EPUB download is actually an excellent addition, so I'm glad to have both options now. Looking forward to the promised road map changes of returning Reading History and Collections. I really really really miss my reading history. Rating 3 instead of 2 in acknowledgement of the roadmap. Will boost once the key QoL features for library management and reading history are back.
