5/5Wonderful mission, evolving app
I love the mission of this org to provide ebooks that support local independent bookstores. Thank you to the visionary founders and developers! I’ve just bumped this up from 4 stars to 5. When I first started using the app a few months ago, the highlighting was clunky and buggy, very frustrating. But in two updates over the past month or two, that’s been massively improved and now works as it should. There’s still room for improvement in some issues that are mostly cosmetic, relating to page layout, but it’s clear the developers are hard at work on delivering a good user experience. Know that your efforts are seen and appreciated! (If you’re looking at many of the reviews, pay attention to the dates. Because new updates keep coming, many of the problems mentioned in older reviews have already been fixed.)

4/5Great alternative to the mainstream app
After using for a while the one thing that continues to annoy me is the **arrow at bottom left of page to proceed to the next chapter.** It gets in the way of the letters in the last line of text. I would rather the continuous scrolling just continue between chapters. Other suggestions for improvement: 1) allow for orientation lock for those of us who read in bed, especially as it seems to wildly lose my place if it switches from horizontal to vertical. 2) improve the ability to find last place read to either when switching between devices or when you accidentally tap the screen causing it to jump to some kind of crazy place. My work around has been to highlight a few words periodically and whenever I leave off so I can find my place again if it jumps to some mystery spot. I later go back and delete superfluous highlights. 3) partner with library systems so they can buy from you also and I can use your app for library ebooks. 4) find a way for readers to share a purchased book with a short list of friends like we used to do in the good old days with “real” books. This is the one huge downside to digital media and makes me reluctant to pay full price for books if I’m the only one who gets to read them.

1/5New update added bugs
I went to open the app this morning to read a book I had started. I got nothing but a white page. (This is on a new iPad.) I closed and reopened the app several times with the same result. I went to the App Store to open it that way and found there was an upgrade. It would not allow me to open the app without upgrading, so I did. Now I can no longer place/remove bookmarks or adjust the font size. I touch the place to do that, it briefly appears then closes before I can take any action, changing pages in the process. Please fix this ASAP as the app is unusable without these features. I also still want a built-in dictionary. If there is one, it doesn’t work. Also, when I go to my library, I just see blue rectangles, no covers, no titles. How am I supposed to open a book I can’t see? Turning on WiFi doesn’t help. They’re still just blue rectangles instead of book covers. I’m going back to the Kindle. That’s the best book app, even though the company is loathsome. Update: nothing has been fixed and it is getting worse. If I turn my iPad off, after turning it back 9n again, I have to reconnect to WiFi to reopen my book. I don’t always have access to WiFi so this is totally unacceptable. I cannot buy any more books here unless this is fixed.

4/5Nice Start!
I’m so excited to be able to switch to Bookshop and support local bookstores! I attempted to read a book on here and I have a couple issues. I don’t understand why vertical scroll only works when my iPad is upright vertically. When I read on my iPad, I read with it flipped horizontally since most iPad cases have a stand to hold them up horizontally. It would be easier for couch and bed reading if there was vertical scroll no matter what way the iPad is turned. I’m a big fan of continuous scroll horizontally and hate having to “turn the page”. Another thing I’d love to see is more fonts, as I’ve seen a few others mention. It would also be interesting to see if there was a way to change font color. I enjoy reading in dark mode, but have noticed some other apps opt for a light gray for font color because stark white on the black background can be harsh on the eyes. Overall, I’m glad that there seems to be regular updates to concerns that others have mentioned. I know this is a new app, so I’m excited to see what improvements will be made in the future!

5/5Good app, but …
Overall the app is nice and has many of the same features as any e-reader. There is one glitch and two obvious improvements that would make the app easier to use. You can highlight text and make notes, but the app doesn’t always highlight the exact text you select. It will get some of it, but then it won’t highlight the first letter or word of a sentence or something like that. It’s a small thing, but it’s awkward and frustrating. It’s also annoying that you can’t buy ebooks directly in the app. You have to navigate to your Bookshop account on a web page, buy and download the book there, then come back to the app and refresh your library to load the book. I’m not sure if buying books within the app is some sort of proprietary thing they cannot replicate. Otherwise, it doesn’t make sense to me why buying in-app is something they wouldn’t integrate, since you have to be logged into the same account to use the app and access your library anyway. I’d also love to have a line guide where you can highlight each line of text as you go. This feature in Apple Books makes it so easy for me to stay focused, so it would be nice to have that here so I can continue to support local bookstores and get the reading experience I want.

Please address the 404 error and problem registering device errors that have recently marked user experience on both laptop and in phone app. I support Bookshop and want it to succeed as a competitor to other ebook apps but it must be reliable.

I really like what this app stands for, but it's so glitchy, it skips pages, sometimes I can't log in on either of my devices, it closes randomly. I've reinstalled it and it didn't really help. I also don't like that I can't have my book go to my Indie bookstore for pickup, but it's shipping only. They are a ways off from being able to compete with Amazon and Google books. Hopefully it will get better with time.

it worked great, until it didn't. in the past few weeks launching the app only loads the bookstore storefront - i say storefront but with app restrictions i cant buy anything, of course. i can't get to my library and my previous purchases. update: it now almost works but seems to.think the screen is a bit wider than it is. a few characters at the end of the line are out of sight unless i scroll over to the right a bit. i also only see the.option to view my library if i am offline.
