1. 1/5Easy to navigate, Customer service nonexistent

   I subscribed to a Sunday through Monday print edition. Paid for it on Sept 14th. I read that it could take between 2 and 5 business days before we received our first edition in our mailbox. Had no problem with that. The thing is, It’s now September 29th and we haven’t received ANY newspapers at ALL. I called the customer service number, (all automated system) Bottom line, I was told that the regional manager for my “area” would be “notified “ of the issue I was having and it would be brought to their attention. Apparently it never was. I formally requested a full refund tonight. Not sure I’ll get one since it seems seems everything is all automated. Definitely not recommending AZ Republic and the app to anyone unless they get their customer service act together.

2. 1/5Pretty awful

   I was forced onto this app and away from the AZ Central app that worked very well, about two weeks ago. This one is so bad, it’s awful. It consistently freezes up, if you barely touch an ad or a story or somewhere else, for who knows with this app, you get a pop up page. How fun, as then you must close out of that pop up and hope that you will be back to your article- but as an added feature, they make sure that doesn’t always happen. Also if you like to zoom in to make the text or photos bigger, the app again makes sure to mess with the screen and either not work properly so you can be in the page you were on, or it pops open a dreaded window again. Another advantage of this awful app is you aren’t sure it’s going to load properly as the pop up ad on first and sports pages slows everything down. Give me back the working model dimwits. Otherwise I may unsubscribe

3. 2/5Like reading online paper but app is buggy and poorly designed

   I give it 2 stars because I can’t bring myself to stop reading a ‘real’ newspaper layout. Every 2 or 3 days I’m logged off for no reason. This is a downgrade from when there was a separate E-newspaper that worked reliably. The design isn’t an improvement so all I get is the ‘new’ reader that is more unreliable, with AZ Central which I don’t want or need. Oh, and this version added pop up ads that weren’t there before. That alone makes me question paying $20 a month to not get a physical paper and additional popups. My parents get some papers delivered for less. That’s good because they can’t even figure out how to login. I would explain it to them, but it’s frustrating with my own problems and I don’t need to help them every few days when they would inevitably get logged out. I like that you can access other city’s Gannett papers if you want. I tried it a few times for sports coverage, but the hassle isn’t worth reading my former town's paper where I haven’t lived for 20 years. Today I’m getting a different connection error that I hope is temporary.

4. 5/5Feeling the connection

   I moved to Arizona in 1988 from Alaska. Since then, I have moved to different neighborhoods 5 times in Scottsdale. Some neighborhoods were more friendly than others and it’s that connection with others that made the difference. This is what being a subscriber does for me. No matter what neighborhood I live in can always read the newspaper and get connected to any neighborhood I want. Journalism is important I am also doing my part to support the local paper. Just like voting it makes me feel like I am making a contribution back to my local and larger neighborhood.

5. 1/5A Rag…

   This paper has become an unequivocal rag. Customer service is non-existent. Delivery is iffy at best. No one edits the articles anymore…bad form, punctuation & grammar. Entertainment & Sportswriter columnists do not qualify as opinion writers. Let them stick to what they know about their area of expertise & not what they think or feel. The writers are no longer journalists but INFLUENCERS who don’t know what proper, good journalistic style is or just don’t care about it. The BIAS is PALPABLE, unsettling, unacceptable and unbecoming. Shame on The Arizona Republic, USA Today, Gannett, New Media Investment Group, GateHouse Media and Greg Burton. How to run a formerly fine newspaper into the ground…they’ve perfected it! The app is cumbersome & non-intuitive & so layered, it’s frustrating…and I’m tired of attempting to talk to people in the Philippines whose English is just slightly better than my Tagalog.
