  1. 2/5So FRUSTRATING...false promises from Runkeeper!

I have been using Runkeeper for over three years. I really want to LOVE this app, but am so frustrated by the false promises that the company keeps putting forward. Before the iWatch, this app was a great app for tracking runs while carrying your phone. The iWatch unleashed what we as runners all waited for, and new “phoneless” running experience with the same great run tracking, and this is where Runkeeper has failed (iWatch Series 1), failed again (Series 2), and critically failed (Series 3). Run tracking on iWatch GPS/Cellular is not rocket science for app developers, as I have tested a variety of other apps that prove consistently accurate and functional. Consistent and functional are the key words here, cause Runkeeper is neither. I am a premium subscriber, dropping more than $50/year to allow me to access the Runkeeper training plans...but, oh wait, those training plans are NOT transferable to iWatch despite 4-5 months of false promises from Runkeeper that “it is coming”. Secondly, do you have any idea how frustrating it is to be in mile 3 of a ten mile run and you look at your watch is says you only ran 1.2 miles? Yes, this is what had happened inconsistently on my watch without my phone, yet no other app has this problem! I am sad to write this review as I want to LOVE this app, but when we are in the age of autonomous vehicles, GPS/Cellular watches, etc. and $50 annual membership, you expect certain core functionality with continued improvements rather than inconsistent and flawed programming with false promises.

  2. 4/5The Best Free App Available

I've used the free version of Runkeeper since 2010 - and in the early years gave the 3 or 4 most well known of the others a try but none come close to Runkeeper for reliability and dependability. No, it's not always perfect but 99.9 percent of the time it records my statistics perfectly. and when you add the fact that my data has been reliably accessible of the server a going back to 2010 - well anyone would be hard pressed to knock this app in any way. Now that said, I do not own an Apple watch so all of my comments are based only on iPhone use. There are only a couple of things keeping Runkeeper from being absolutely perfect as far as I am concerned. One is the very occasional and inexplicable cutoff of data tracking in mid-activity. However this is very rare and even when it does happen the activity can relatively easily be edited on the Runkeeper website after the fact (a feature I REALLY appreciate). The other issue - and I guess not such a valid complaint since funding for a free app does have to come from somewhere but nonetheless - I rue the day ASICS got their hands on the Runkeeper. At least the obnoxious time consuming logo display on startup has finally been reduced somewhat, but the app definitely remains noticeably slower and bloated with ASICS overhead apparently slowing it down. If only there were a way to kick ASICS and it's bloat to the curb and restore the instantaneous startup and faster syncing that we enjoyed in the pre-ASICS days, this would truly be a five - nay, SIX star app again.

  3. 5/5Runkeeper Pro

Personally Runkeeper has been so helpful to me in my running life. When I first started running my Dad (who runs marathons) recommended the Runkeeper app. I downloaded it and used it... you hit start when you start your run, and stop when your run is over. It tracks you miles per minute, calories burned, an accurate count of how many miles you ran, and the time it took you to run your distance. There is so many helpful settings you can use to adjust the app. You can set goals of your target distance and time. Not only does Runkeeper support running it also can keep track of all these things through walking, cycling, mountain biking, hiking, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, skating, swimming, rowing, Nordic walking, and it also has a wheelchair mode, so people with disabilities can make use of this wonderful app too. I am 13, and for me this app was just so simple and easy to use. A couple weeks of non-stop running and my dad allowed me to update the app to Runkeeper Pro. Through Runkeeper Pro I could set up a training plan for a 5K 10K 10 mile run, half marathon, or marathon. I could pick the days of the week I wanted to take off the plan, and I was good to go. Every day (besides Sunday for me) I would get up in the morning and complete the pre-planned run with the distance time, and other types of runs that the app had set up. Now on August 7 I'm planning to do a 10K! This was the best app I've ever used in my life. I highly recommend this for anyone who is even slightly interested in running... it was a big help... all I had to do was make time in my day to go on 1 half an hour run... easy enough... and so rewarding!

  4. 1/5I don’t want to create an account - deleting Runkeeper

I previously rated this app with 5 stars (see below) Since it will no longer allow use of the app without creating an account and logging in, I will be deleting Runkeeper and finding another app to use. There are many running apps out there to choose from and I am willing to pay for a one-time purchase - as long as logging in is not a requirement. ======= My previous review follows: ====== Love this app. I opened the app for the first time, pressed start, and took off running. Every 5 minutes, it reported my time, distance, and rate in minutes/mile for me to hear while I run. While running, it displays a map following my tracks. Also it displays stats during the run - which r not really needed to look at since I hear them every 5 min. When finished running, i pressed stop and it recited a summary of my workout for me to listen to while I warmed down. Then allowed me to write notes about the workout before I saved it. There was no learning curve for using this app. It was very intuitive. I can call up saved runs and view the map of my tracks as well as the stats. It also compares all my runs and displays my best in a summary of all runs. I have not created an account. And I'm still on version 5.5. There are many more features in this app which I have not felt the need to use yet.

  5. 5/5Great motivator!

This app is wonderful- I’ve only been using it just over a year (still free version) and I must say it’s so fun! I’m finding myself using it more all the time. I just love knowing what my stats are ie: mileage and speed, on a hike or causal quick walk around the neighborhood. The different voices you can choose from are fun too- and you can always turn that off if you don’t want to hear it. Being able to track total mileage for a day/week/month, compare to previous months, or set a distance goal and push for it has been really cool and motivating. (Word to wise: Take Baby Steps!) When I feel like I’m not doing great it’s nice to see how far I’ve come literally and figuratively in the last year. (Over 200 miles!) Plus- there’s a lot of settings you can fiddle around with and ways to interact more (or less) like turning off the emails. It’s a well made app, almost haven’t had any issues with it- and after I fiddle some more and see how well it’s helping me get back into the almost-daily-walking/ movement saddle, well- I just may spring for the paid version.
