1. 2/5Unintuitive, and now with Ads

   If used strictly to get from point A to point B it’s fine. But if you want to add stops it’s just unintuitive. You can make a list of say, restaurants or shops but when you click on a location it takes you right there so you have no idea how far it is from other places on your list. Which is fine if you know the area but when you’re new to a place it’s a headache of zooming in, zooming out and memorizing some landmark to create a bearing of where all the places you want to go are. The only way to make places you want to visit stay visible on the map overview is to add every single one to your favorites -which is what I will end up doing because as it is the list-making function is more of a headache than useful. It’s no fun driving away from a town then looking at a list and thinking “oh shoot I was right there and I didn’t check this place out”… which leads to these new annoying “Editor’s Picks” god forbid I should be able to easily see my own recommendations pop up when I’m traveling or outside my living area but now I get Apple spam I have to scroll past just to get to my saved places. I spent an hour tonight trying to get rid of it but apparently nothing works so now I’m stuck with these Ads on this $1200 phone that I already paid for in cash with my $10 terabyte of iCloud data that I also pay for every month. If Apple is going to include these ads (ok -“recommendations”) in all their native apps they should offer a discount version of the phone (think kindle). I didn’t pay full price to get an ad-box.

2. 4/5Single Biggest Complaint…

   I love Apple Maps, and far prefer it to Google Maps or (ugh) Waze. However, there’s one issue that has bugged me for years. When driving, some of the most important information I need is displayed in the top bar, including my next turn, distance to that turn, and what lane I need to be in. However, if I get some sort of alert from another app, such as a text message or email, the banner notification covers that top bar, hiding all the information I need to see. Sometimes these banners disappear after a few seconds, but most often they stay, covering the top bar, until I manually swipe it off, which can be dangerous when you’re barreling down the freeway. And yes, I use Driving Focus to cut down on some of those banners, but occasionally I’ll still get a text from someone on my Allowed list. Also, I use a Continuous Glucose Monitor; there’s no way to selectively limit the banners and still alert me if my blood sugar is out of range. Having those banner notifications be able to display is a safety issue, but so is their obtrusiveness to the Maps UI. The way I wish it would work is, rather than the banners covering the top bar, they push everything down, cutting into the map graphics a bit. This would allow you to see all the information and still allow alerts without impacting the UI in any major way. To be fair, this is an issue with all map products on the iPhone, but with Apple Maps, you have the ability to make the changes needed. If implemented, this change would make another improvement over the competitors.

3. 1/5Can’t use

   Well. I’ve used this for like 10 years, and I didn’t know that there was a setting that was turned on for automatic updates, which is fine, I didn’t see it. So I turned it off. The app had already updated by itself because when I plugged my phone in to charge, the phone turned on by itself and connected to WiFi (naturally, as IPhones do). So when I went to see why I couldn’t look at food times, it was because my “Location Services” were off. The button for the “Location Services” at the top of the screen has now turned blue. It changed while I watched it. It was black before. Just regular text, and then it was a blue bar. There was a text box that popped up and only gave me the options of keeping my “Location Services” off, or turning them on through settings. Fine. I tried using “Offline Maps,” but that doesn’t work. So I went into settings to go turn on my “Location Services,” however, they were already turned on. My settings were set to use “Location Services,” “While Using” the application. This didn’t make sense. I should have “Location Services” on. I went to go change the settings to “Always On” because I thought this might help. I cannot. My button for the “Location Services” settings have been greyed out and I cannot click on them to change anything. I am unable to use my buttons to change my settings from on to even more accurate and on, and it will not let me. I have no navigation now and I guess no Taco Bell :,) Wai

4. 1/5Cannot keyword search local businesses

   In addition to what I already wrote, following this, I have a new complaint that they are trying to force their sexual stuff and gender stuff into my map app, but all I want is a drive-through and you’re trying to offer me sexual gender locations. Sad to say it, but like all Apple goods and services, the quality is going down while they simultaneously attempt to charge us a membership fee, just to be able to use our property which we have already purchased. Previously, I could search a keyword and it would try to present me with businesses within 20 miles of my location containing those keywords. However, it just forces me to a random business that’s not nearby, that has the keyword, but it might be in another state across the country, and I’m not allowed to simply search for every business in my area that might have that keyword. So what’s the point of maps anymore? I’m not able to search for businesses nearby which give certain services. The map cannot possibly know what I want. It has to give me the list of everything which matches my search criteria and let me decide what I’m looking for. It can’t possibly pick a random store and tell me this is where I have to go and then not allow me to have any other results show up in the search. There’s multiple businesses which have my keyword nationwide, and probably in my local area, but it’s forcing me only look at one store, and one store only. What can possibly justify this?

5. 2/5Game-breaking omission of features

   App works fine for basic needs — going from A to B with nary an excursion along the way. However, I’d say that for any trip more sophisticated than that, the app fails. I believe it’s a necessity to support route plans with multiple stops. For example, “I want to stop at the store on the way to a friend’s house.” Mind blowing that this isn’t one of the most fundamental features in, not only Apple’s, but everyone’s map apps. It’s a function that is so common in people’s lives. I’d love Apple 3,000 if they would just add this. Seriously, guys; don’t worry about waiting for the next full feature update, please just slip this into one of your incremental updates. I know Apple is kind of stubborn about adding big, convenient features in between title updates, but I think they should break their rule for this. Another main issue with the app is the feature to add stops during a route (the “excursion” feature, because that’s essentially what it’s for). It’s not possible to choose specifically where you need to go; they give a few categories like gas, food, maybe shopping and some others, but even then it leaves out some of the nearby businesses that fall into those categories. It’s honestly a half-baked implementation. I don’t use the feature since the one time I tried using it and found that it didn’t show me the one gas station that had the best price, not that the price of gas is related to the app, but it’s the fact that it left out results at all, and especially in that situation, that really turned me away.
