5/5Best way to go paperless
I am in love with this app! I’ve been knitting for close to 30 years in which I’ve amassed a huge collection of digital patterns that I would print and put in a binder. I also would like to give each project its own clipboard. After all these years of hoarding patterns, my wool room is full of paper patterns, binders and, clipboards! Now with KC I am able to scan hard copy originals into PDF’s and reduce the clutter. It is so much easier having access to whatever projects I’m working on readily available on all of my Apple devices. Example: say I’m knitting a sock ( which I rarely need a pattern for) that is more intricate. Since I always have my phone or tablet with me..I can simply toss the sock into a really small bag and go. The customizable counters are great! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ +

3/5A step backwards in NG
I had the original (“legacy”) version of knitCompanion and really loved it. I still recommend knitCompanion NG, as it’s still the best way of dealing with charted patterns that I know of, but it feels like the magic is gone. The original looked a little clunky, perhaps, but the user interface was immediately understandable, and the free tier contained the essential features to start knitting a pattern with ease. KnitCompanion NG may look slicker, but its a strange slickness. The UI is full of weird icons with a graphic style that’s reminiscent more of Windows 10 than of iOS, and the icons generally have no explanatory text associated with them, so that although the application is still quite simple, using it can be surprisingly frustrating. Worse, the developer appears to have changed her business model so that even the simplest pattern setup tasks (EDIT: I originally had naming a stitch counter as an example here, but the developer corrected me on that) require a paid subscription, so that the free tier of NG is actually *less* capable than the free tier of the original version! That creates bad will and makes me in turn less likely to support the application with a paid subscription. KnitCompanion is still a very useful tool, but I’d strongly urge the developer to rethink her business model and her approach to UI design. EDIT: I appreciate that the developer responded to this, and pointed out that the free tier of Legacy had ads, whereas the free tier of NG doesn’t. Personally, I’d be happy to have the ads if it meant more features.

1/5Needs minor improvements
I honestly really love this. I usually don’t go for paid apps, but the functionality is pretty great and def worth it. Will fix the stars when I hear a response- can’t figure out how to get response otherwise. MY MAJOR ISSUES I’m noticing a couple things that I think the developers could improve upon, so I wanted to reach out. 2 main things I’ve noticed- when using the linked counters for something like a repeat, once I start I can’t edit the counter. And I am really good at slightly misreading, like do this repeat 10 more times, which I will make a repeat counter for 10, realizing later that it’s 10 more, so 11 in reality. But I can’t adjust that. Also, why can’t I minimize the area open for “to do” when I have something like 4 or 5 linked counters going. When that happens, I can’t see the linked counters, and I have a big empty box that I don’t need. Minor problems, but hoping to hear that they get adjusted soon!

5/5Can’t imagine life without knitCompanion!
knitCompanion is an amazing app that makes knitting from patterns so much easier! I got into it with my first project, and I’ve never knit without it. I never will. I love the fact that as soon as I logged into the new version, I got credit for the subscriptions I had purchased in the old version, so I’m set for a while now. I like the new interface. I’m getting used to it, but so far I really love the changes. There’s a lot of power here, so it’s not always completely intuitive, but for the more complicated things like setup of new patterns there are such fabulous FAQs and documentation. And whether you’re new or converting from the old version, be sure to watch the 3 introductory videos available on the knitCompanion site.

1/5Please turn off upgrade solicitation upon every launch
Overall this is a good app in need of a real competitor. It does a lot of good things, though iCloud sync or Dropbox sync for projects would be nice so that I can use my iPad screen at home without losing my spot. What occasioned me to write a negative review is the fact that it seems that every other time I launch this app, I get an annoying dialog reminding me to sign up to one of this app’s in-app subscriptions. I don’t find the upgrade options compelling, but maybe I’m not the knitter that can take advantage of the upgrades. That said it’s really annoying to see these exhortations to upgrade so frequently. Please reduce the frequency, give us an opt out option, or actually enhance both or either tools package to justify a yearly subscription. There’s a lot that’s good here, but it feels like the app is sitting on its laurels and the constant upgrade reminders are nuisances. If this keeps up, and no competitor appears, I’d rather just go back to paper and stitch counting.
